What is Assistive Technology (AT)?

AT is any product, equipment or system that enhances learning, working, and daily living. AT doesn’t cure or eliminate learning difficulties, but it can help a person reach their potential by capitalizing on strengths and helping bypass areas of difficulty. A student may need assistive technology to access, participate, and make progress in the educational program if other accommodations have not met their individual learning needs. The type of service and /or tool depends on the nature of the student’s disability, curriculum expectations, performance challenges and environment.

AT services include assessment, provision of AT devices for students who demonstrate need, coordination of devices that qualifying students use, collaboration with other services, and training and technical assistance for students, family and professionals who work with the student.  AT consideration is a collaborative process and requires feedback from the student's family and a variety of educational professionals (e.g. audiologists, occupational therapists, physical therapists, speech language pathologists, vision teachers, and orientation and mobility professionals).
